Medical Check-up Camp – One Step towards “Healthy” Living

It has been rightly said by Buddha “Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth, faithfulness the best relationship”

So, this Friday Umang Foundation’s young team decided to give the residents of Rahul Nagar – Slum Area in Mulund (W) a gift of Good health with the faithful medical assistance by medical professionals. The objective of the camp was not only to conduct check ups but also to inform and educate the participants on many simple tips of healthy living. It is also very important to know as rains are on their way to strike city of Mumbai.

It all began on a bright Friday morning with setting up counters and medicines to help the residents easily understand the process of health check-up. There were counters for:

• Registration
• Height and Weight Measurement
• Blood Pressure
• Blood Sugar Level
• ENT Examination
• Orthopedic Examination
• Physiotherapist
• Detailed Eye Check up
• Counseling to patients about Healthy Living
• A series of Lecture on Cancer Awareness
• General Physical examination

A team of 30+ responsible doctors and technicians were made available to the slum residents and they were seen giving personal attention to each of the participant’s habits and symptoms. Venue for the camp was Jai Bharat School, Mulund Colony, Mulund (W). A word about this medical camp was already spread, through banners and personal visit to every home by volunteers

As the day moved further, people from nearby localities started pouring in huge numbers. People with different age-groups, were seen waiting for their turn at the registration desk. Around 150 residents completed their check-ups in mere two and half hours of the event. Some of the patients who were suffering from common ailments were given free medicines by the team.

Series of Lecture on Cancer Awareness was also given by eminent doctors.

Post-Lunch period was no different either; people kept flooding in for check-up which was a good sign of awareness created by the Team Umang. Before the day ended, 300+ residents successfully completed their check-ups and a few had been referred to Specialist Doctors for further treatment.

All the helpful and generous doctors were given a Certificate of Appreciation for supporting the Umang team in such a noble cause. These Doctors were more than happy and eager to give their support in many such events to be held in near future as without them the event would not have become a hit among the residents.

Precaution is always better than cure and such check-up camps do help the common man to understand his body structure and take precautionary measures as per his eating habits. If every youth of India takes a simple step towards creating a healthy atmosphere around his place then surely medicines and diseases would be just a part of history.

Umang Foundation and its team have planned similar check-up camps in every month to build up a habit of healthy living among all.

This was Umang Foundation’s 152nd event.

Health Checkup Camp

Health Check up Camp: Amrapali Society, Mhada Building, Next to Kanjurmarg West Station

During all Umang Members meeting in the month of November 2009, we come up with a thought to organize a Health Check up camp with a focus to serve under privilege section of society and responsibilities were given to Subhradeep Bhatacharya and Ajay Pardeshi. They have identified a location near Kanjurmarg Station in Mhada Building number 8 and the date was decided as Sunday Dec 20, 2009.

Subhradeep Bhatacharya, Ajay Pardeshi and Ashish Goyal were the ‘Umang Champion’ for this activity and responsible for all arrangements. Team Umang had a group of 16 volunteers for this camp: Sandeep Bhanushali, R S Goyal, Vishal Shanbhag, Manish Nair, Kirti Masurkar, Renuka Bhavake, Rahul Gupta, Anup Palod, Shilpa Palod, Sunita, Kiran, Chetan Karkhanis, Ruchir Aswal,
Health Checkup Camp was led by Dr Deepak Patil with whom we had a team of 6 doctors along with a team of 5 doctors from J J Hospital and 4 technicians.

This health check up camp was focused towards basic problems faced by individuals who mostly got ignored in the day to day busy schedule. We have organized a series of medical examinations for all the patients:-

1. Height & Weight Measurement
2. Peak Flow Test (PFT)
3. Hemoglobin Test
4. Blood Pressure Examination
5. Blood Sugar Examination
6. Basic Medicines for all
7. Doctors have examined every patient’s individually

Impressions:

Meticulous - In one word, that is how the Umang Champion(s) for the event had planned the details. Every last detail medicines, instruments, first aid, everything was duly prepared and made available before time. Doctors were convinced to leave aside their much desired rest day and spend the whole day treating patients; perhaps more patients than they would treat on an average sitting in their clinic.

Efficient - A total of 345 patients with just 11 doctors and 4 medical assistants, that's an average of more than 30 patients per doctor and in just a span of 4 hours. Numbers speak volumes of the efficient manner in which every patient was covered. Not to mention of course, that each patient did get the due attention and care needed.

Order in chaos - As the day progressed, patients started pouring in and quickly too. Considering that it was a camp and not a regular hospital, it could soon turn out to be quite chaotic. The Umang Champion(s) expertly organized the whole flow in a manner so that the queues were short and all patients were attended to without to much waiting time.

Enthusiastic - That's how we would describe the Umang team and the doctors who helped make the camp a success. Of course, the one adjective does not do justice to the amount of hard work and tireless efforts that were put in by all the doctors and volunteers.

Spread the good word - With more of these free medical camps, NGOs like Umang are providing leadership in a sector where the State's efforts are still leave much desired. If only more of us would leave the comfort of our Sofa on those odd weekends, then more of such camps can be organized and the concept of free and affordable health care for all would not be a distant dream but a visible reality. So, it’s time to spread the good word and encourage more people to get involved and lend their hand.
