Memorable evening at an Old Age home

On a lazy Sunday evening on 25th July 2010, a bunch of enthusiastic and passionate people representing Umang Foundation, took time out to share moments of joy with some old people at an Old Age Home ( H.K.Chainani’s Elder’s Home) in Mulund (E), Mumbai.

The event was started at around 5pm in the evening where members from Umang Foundation started with introducing themselves to make the inmates familiar and comfortable for the complete evening.

A full-on comedy and interesting drama was prepared specially for the evening by Karm Kala Manch – A Theater group based out in Andheri (E). The lead theatre artists and the director of the group were present to demonstrate their skills of acting which brought a huge smile on the faces of the people present on the day.

As we entered the home, there were all dwelling faces and were looking out for a hand to pull them out of their worries for a change. While these people do get fed and clothed, what they lack is someone to hug and talk with and Team Umang along with the theatre group were successful enough to interact and communicate with them to help them forget all their pains and sorrows.

The drama was followed by the musical evening wherein some of the young talent amongst the Team Umang helped in making the evening all the more memorable with their melodious voices. The musical chords were strikened by Mr. Dayal from the Old age home who initiated with a beautiful old hit number “Tum se accha kaun hai “

Old memories were refreshened after listening to some memorable hit romantic numbers sung by Ms.Prashasti Shukla, Mr. Anup Palod, Mr Vishal Jain and other members of Team Umang.

Special requests of devotional songs and old hit songs started pouring in soon after the musical extravaganza began. There were happy faces in the crowd to see the young people spend their time with them when they thought they were left alone by their own kith and kin. As always, what we take away is more than what we give. It’s been rightly said that “Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul”

This was followed by a energetic and interesting game of Housie wherein "Enthusiasm” to participate, “Competitive Spirit” in playing games and “Family Culture” supporting each other displayed by 60+years’ young fathers & mothers were lessons for all 20+years old working professionals from various backgrounds!!

“Guess the product” was the next game in which most of the TV buffs from the old age home gave a touch competition to each other by guessing the product within a fraction of second!! Gifts were given away to lucky winners. One could see both excitement in the winners' faces and disappointment in those of who lost; exhibiting that there is still a lot of spirit left in them!

A Vote of thanks was given by the Mr Ashok Sahani, Caretaker of H K Chainani Elders Home, filled with wishes and prayers for all. The whole event was organized by humble request by Mr. Kunal Pimpalikar and his whole family, who wished to celebrate “Guru Poornima” in loving memory of his Late Grandmother. The whole Pimpalikar family were seen to be present at the venue to cheer up and help the Umang Foundation’s team in bringing smiles on the faces of our father and mother like figures !!

It was then time to celebrate the birthdays of the inmates who were born in the month of July. Two big cakes were brought in and birthday caps were worn by everybody to cheer up the Birthday Boys J J

Home-made yummy Dinner prepared by Mrs. Pimpalikar was the last on the cards for these inmates in Old Age Home. Team Umang served the dinner to all the inmates and for a change giving a rest to care-takers of Old age home for a day!!

While leaving from the Elders home, everybody seemed to be so overwhelmed by Team Umang efforts that some of them had tears of joy in their eyes!! It was indeed a heart-warming and memorable evening for all of them.

Don’t they wish to celebrate Diwali, Christmas, Id or Guru Poornima with their families as we do?

Don’t they wish to live, chat and share their feelings with their own family as we do?

Just imagine how they feel without their dear ones. They wake up every morning with a hope that their dear ones will definitely come to meet them and take them back this day. But every night is disappointing. And this cycle becomes a part of their life. Needless to say, Umang Foundation gave them a little regard and they showered tons of blessings on them.

This visit to old age home was a learning experience for all of them and after this, they hoped that none of us could ever think of sending our parents to old age home. The evening ended with a promise to re-visit the home to learn and share some more moments with them!!

A step outside our goal in helping these old people is very essential, FOR, they are the parents without whom we would not be where we are TODAY!!!!

This was Umang Foundation's 156th event

An extravagant musical evening at an Next - Inning Home

“Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life” Such quotes are heard many a times but we hardly get time to understand it in real sense.

This Sunday, Team Umang explained the true meaning of this by organizing a musical evening for the residents of next inning home in Mulund (East). Inmates of Next Inning Home had an exciting musical evening this Sunday which was a truly unforgettable for most of the people present at the venue.

It all started when Team Umang decided to visit the Old Age home in Mulund east, to give an evening filled with excitement, music and happiness for the house members. Activity Details and the basic flow of the program was discussed and planned with the cordial support of Mr. Ashok Sahani who manages the Old age home. Young Old people living there had started preparations for this event 2 weeks prior to the actual event.

Evening started with an entertainment section where in evergreen old songs were sung by members of Team Umang (Muni Raman, Anup Palod, Roli Sharma, Pooja Goyal, Jimmy Sanghvi, Sweta Singh, Amrapali and Garima Goyal). The heart-touching romantic songs and the singing skills motivated the house members to showcase their hidden talents and then began the talent hunt among all the house members. It became very tough for the Team Umang to decide upon the most talented person among all, as everybody was just at par in excellence. Seeing the high energy level of inmates it is was really difficult to select one or two person out of the whole group.

A Karaoke set was arranged specially for this musical concert. Members of Team Umang –cum- Singers of Team Umang continued singing for around two hours on demand of the house members.

Songs like ‘Neele Neele Ambar pe’, ‘Rang barse’, ‘Mere Angne mein’ and many others saw huge applaud from the members. Some of the house members just couldn’t resist themselves from dancing on these popular songs. Dancing, Singing, Bhajans continued for the major part of the evening just because of the active participation of house members.

Next section comprises of lots of interesting games exclusively planned for the evening.

A Simple game of Chanting ‘Om’ for the maximum time flagged off the Game section. Few Tongue twisters were introduced among the inmates to create a funny atmosphere. But, some of the aunties were so superior in this art of repeating tongue twisters that the spectators were just spellbound and surprised. An Exciting game of Housie was also played among all the inmates. Winners were given on the spot prizes for their marvelous enthusiasm for participating in the games.

Birthday Celebration of two house members was scheduled next. Cake was brought in by the volunteers for Ms Devi Kolani and Mr. Ghanshyam Das, birthday mates for the month of March. Decoration, Birthday Caps and Cake cutting ceremony made them recollect their young days where birthdays were always celebrated in families. Ms Devi Kolani, said “ I am feeling like I am in my family after having such a grand celebration"

The old age home members followed a strict discipline of having dinner, so the music fun and enjoyment had to be stopped for dinner time. During dinner time Pav Bhaji, Fruit Salad and Kaju Katli was arranged and served by the Team Umang. Delicious food was just like the icing on the cake for the evening. Team Umang also fulfilled the household requirements of the old age home by providing Rice, Oil and Tea in bulk.

Mr. Ashok Sahani, Care-taker of Old Age home, was quoted as “Umang Foundation and its members have done an wonderful job today by giving their precious weekend time to this old age home. Faces of the house members were just glowing with the smiles, and this could only happen due to the heart-ful team work of Umang Foundation”

“Team Umang is determined to bring positive change and spread smile all over with such events” added Ashish Goyal, Founder Umang Foundation.
House members specifically took promises from each of the volunteer to return and organize many such events for them. The mere five hours of time brought all of the house members close to the Team Umang and they wished the evening did not end so early. Team Umang have promised to organize similar events in future too because, Life is not Life, if it’s not lived for others!!!

This was Umang Foundation’s 141st event.

Diwali Decoration and Celebration at Old Age Home

Details of the DAY
Saturday, October 10, 2009

Diwali Decoration and Celebration at Old Age Home

Ever imagined celebrating festivals with unknown people away from home? Many of us can’t even imagine celebrating festivals without our loved ones around. This weekend, Saturday 10th Oct 2009, Team Umang has reached a scenic venue where its members are not from a single family.

Yup, you guessed it right! Team Umang has visited a beautifully located Old Age Home in Bhayender (W), Kisan Gopal Rajpuriya Vanprastha Ashram – a second inning home for approx 50 people to bring in the festive spirit of Diwali in all its glory for those who are at a home away from home. This Old Age home is located near Uttan Area in the outskirts of Bhayender.

Team Umang reached the second inning home at 10 a.m. The residents were already seated in the hall area of the Ashram eagerly awaiting the arrival of Team Umang and the celebrations that would come along. The old age residents shook hands and greeted Team Umang with enthusiastic fervor and seemed happy and excited to have them in their premises. Team Umang then went around chit-chatting and greeting the residents individually and after a wholesome, scrumptious breakfast of Poha, dhoklas and tea initiated the celebrations at the Ashram with a bang.

The day was started with Introduction note about Umang Foundation by Diksha Bhojwani and Ashish Goyal to all the inmates and not to a surprise; many inmates could recognize Ashish as this was his 5th visit to this second inning home.

A Bhajans Mandli was invited to entertain and interact with the house members. They were very delighted to hear their favorite bhajans LIVE in front of them.

The bhajans turned out to be a huge hit with the residents and most of them, some even above 70 years of age, stood up to shake a leg or to sing their hearts out with any song they were fond of. The result was an atmosphere filled with divine music and merry and the ashram hall turning into a dance floor.

Who said, practice makes man perfect, we have seen age has no barriers for those who believe people go old by thoughts not by will. These excited housemates were dancing better than any of the members of Team Umang out there then, started the demonstration of singing skills, and they were really melodious.

Meanwhile, the Girls of Team Umang were busy in decorating the house with rangoli, flowers etc. Even boys got a chance to show their hidden talents in rangoli!!! Doors were decorated with stickers and Flowers all around.

A very special bouquet made by uncles and aunties to honor our Trustee Mr. R S Goyal and special thanks to Mr. Yogesh the vocalist of the Bhajan Mandli.

Then at 1:00 PM, its time for lunch which was served and arranged by Team Umang with a simple staple food and sweets in the menu. Housekeeping team of the Old Age home had their share of rest that day, since all the major tasks were handled by the Team Umang. Some of the house mates could not be a part of all these activities because their body is not supporting them to move from their bed but utmost care was taken to interact with them in their respective rooms.

They got emotionally attached with the Team Umang within some time and started narrating sweet memories of their past.

Action resumed in the evening with all the residents assembling inside the temple where a game of housie was organized by Team Umang. Excitement started as game master Gaurav Gujare announced the prizes which were either a medicine box or a spectacle case and it seemed everybody was determined to win the game with fervor, innocence and competitive spirit.

Also, the temple was decorated with Flowers and a beautiful rangoli made by girls of Team Umang.

There were several prizes to be won and in the end every player ended up with a prize in hand. The residents were then distributed packets of ‘Laddoos’ and ‘Namkeen’ as snacks and a Diwali memento of a packet of beautifully decorated Diyas were handed over to each resident.

The residents, away from home, missing their families, had joy on their faces, memories in their eyes and expressed their wholehearted gratitude with priceless smiles, heartfelt blessings and a promise from Team Umang to come again to the Ashram soon, to be their family in the many more festive seasons to come.

Team Umang bid the residents and the Ashram farewell with a mixture of emotions, joy in their eyes and tears in their hearts.

Sometimes, small events bring the greater joy in life. This was a perfect example for understanding how small moments of life can bring greatest joy to people who have given their whole and soul in making young and responsible citizens.

May these Housemates and their families have a very wonderful and happiest Diwali ever!

Justify Full
A enthusiasm never go with age, it goes with heart; You can enjoy every musical moments at any point of life and this truth is once again proved where we have organized a Musical Celebration of Patriotic feeling at our Old Age Home.

After the long mail chains for over two week of discussion and arrangement for spending time at the old age home H K Chainani Elders Home at Mulund (E), there was still some games listing and shopping left for the last minute. We gathered at 2 pm for the discussion which followed by shopping of gifts and some daily utility items for the elders.

The theme decided for the day was patriotism and we had arranged for a troupe of professional singers to take up one of the event. As everyone entered the common hall where the events were organised we welcomed each of them with a National Flag. It was nice to see them proudly tilt their shoulders forward as the Umang volunteers tucked the National Flag to their clothes. Slowly the hall filled up with 30 pretty old ladies and gentle men in their 70s and 80s.

We started with some bhajans followed by patriotic songs. Everyone was clapping along as the chores continued. Healthy snacks were provided to give them a break. As we wanted their equal participation and involvement we played some movie games and Game of Housie. The Umang volunteers sat along with them to help them check their tickets. The Game of Housie winners were given lovely painted mugs along with napkins as a small token.

Now it was time to dance, Yes you believe it or not they all were very enthusiastic about this very part of the event every one danced on the Sindhi numbers and Punjabi remixes even those who had knee problems and could not stand danced sitting on their chair, raising their hands with moving figures and rocking their shoulders. It was good to hear from them that the event and our presence had made them remind their childhood again. They felt YOUNG!! This was our basic motto / intention and our commitment for the day to bring the beautiful smile on their faces. We felt like our objective for the day was fulfilled their smiles made us feel yes!! We had done it!! It was a real sense of achievement for the moment.

Umang Members, who sung many patriotic songs, some of them are :

1. Ae mere vatan k logon
2. Yeh desh hai veer jawano kaa
3. Aye mere pyarae vatan, a merae bichadae vatan
4. Jahan Dal dal par sono ki chidiae karti hai basera
5. Sare jahan se acha
6. Nana muna rahi hu
7. Merae desh ki dharti
8. Vandae matheram
9. Hoto pe sachai rehati hai
10. Hai preet jahan ki reet jahan
11. Jan gan man
12. Bharat humko jaaan sae bhi pyara hai
13. Chak dae India
14. Fir bhi dil hai Hindustani
15. Ae maalik tere bande hum

Now, the time for last session of the day which was Dinner and as we arranged the plates on the tables in the mess area, each one of them came and took their seats like good boys and girls. Yes, their places were fixed!! It was pleasure serving them food... taking care of the consumption in their plates asking them for more wondered if they could get this attention from their own children could not find out if they still lovely painted mugs longed for that or they did overcome !

We had arranged for toothpaste and soaps, for each individual, sufficient to stock for a year. As we handed these to them and bid them farewell they told us “try to make it here, to meet us at least every month” just hoping that we had some more time to spend with them, it was bed time for them and we had to wave them good night. They gave blessings as they waved back blessings from the bottom of their hearts, blessings that were priceless the oldies were really Goldies !!!
