Just when you think most students dread going back to school after a nice long summer holiday, the students of Matoshri Ramabai Ambedkar Vidhyalaya and Amrapali Vidhyalaya in Ulhasnagar did just the opposite.

Up and about in the early hours of June 19, 2010, Members of Umang Foundation have reached the school but for a surprise all school students were already gathered and eagerly waiting team Umang.

Umang Team has personally thanked to each of the school teachers who has visited each student's home to make sure 100% attendance on the day. This was Umang Foundation’s 153rd activity of distributing of Notebooks and Stationery Material among 1000+ less fortunate students.

Umang Team also thanked Mr Sharad from Kalyan Childlin and volunteers of 'Kalyan Childline' who have helped to identify correct students in this school of Ulhasnagar (W).

The event kick started with much fervor by founder Ashish Goyal, who enthralled hoards of students with his fun energy and enthusiasm. Appreciation was the key word here, as team Umang congratulated the toppers from each class with flowers. The drive consisted of Umang Foundations dynamic members distributing books and stationery items, and entertaining school students from nearby slum area.

With much anticipation and excitement, Umang Foundation’s 153rd event was a success. But the event just did not end here. More than 1000 students and pupils were in full attendance to experience 50 trees being planted at the school campus for a green and clean environment. Students, teachers and volunteers together helped plant Ashoka trees, Almond trees and Neem trees.

“Umang Foundation is a boon for us. We feel privileged to have such a highly positioned people in our premises today and deeply thankful to this young team for bringing smiles on the face of our students,” exclaimed Gokul T Pawar, Principal, Matoshri Ramabai Ambedkar Vidhyalaya, Ulhasnagar - 3.

“We could not think of a better way to begin our new academic year. We love the quality of the books and the stationery. This will certainly make our studies much more interesting and will act as impetus for us to do better,” said Savita Rambhau Gore (15 years), Student, Matoshri Ramabai Ambedkar Vidhyalaya, Ulhasnagar - 3.

“The parents of these students are extremely poor. They cannot even afford to give them basic necessities hence most school children end up working at a very small age. In spite of our efforts many students quit studying. But, initiatives like this will inspire students and help them realize the value of education. Umang Foundation - Promote Education initiative is a stepping stone in the future of education,” asserts Jitendra Barhate, Teacher, Amrapali Vidhyalaya.

Umang Foundation has continued its efforts to promote education among underprivileged children by initiating such events so as to support students who cannot afford basic school necessities. “It was a pleasant surprise to watch students display an innocent smile across their face. It was the feel-good factor that makes initiatives like these worthwhile. We at Umang Foundation have various such plans in the near future and for which we are thankful to all those people who have supported us,” explains Ashish Goyal, founder, Umang Foundation.

Medical Check-up Camp – One Step towards “Healthy” Living

It has been rightly said by Buddha “Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth, faithfulness the best relationship”

So, this Friday Umang Foundation’s young team decided to give the residents of Rahul Nagar – Slum Area in Mulund (W) a gift of Good health with the faithful medical assistance by medical professionals. The objective of the camp was not only to conduct check ups but also to inform and educate the participants on many simple tips of healthy living. It is also very important to know as rains are on their way to strike city of Mumbai.

It all began on a bright Friday morning with setting up counters and medicines to help the residents easily understand the process of health check-up. There were counters for:

• Registration
• Height and Weight Measurement
• Blood Pressure
• Blood Sugar Level
• ENT Examination
• Orthopedic Examination
• Physiotherapist
• Detailed Eye Check up
• Counseling to patients about Healthy Living
• A series of Lecture on Cancer Awareness
• General Physical examination

A team of 30+ responsible doctors and technicians were made available to the slum residents and they were seen giving personal attention to each of the participant’s habits and symptoms. Venue for the camp was Jai Bharat School, Mulund Colony, Mulund (W). A word about this medical camp was already spread, through banners and personal visit to every home by volunteers

As the day moved further, people from nearby localities started pouring in huge numbers. People with different age-groups, were seen waiting for their turn at the registration desk. Around 150 residents completed their check-ups in mere two and half hours of the event. Some of the patients who were suffering from common ailments were given free medicines by the team.

Series of Lecture on Cancer Awareness was also given by eminent doctors.

Post-Lunch period was no different either; people kept flooding in for check-up which was a good sign of awareness created by the Team Umang. Before the day ended, 300+ residents successfully completed their check-ups and a few had been referred to Specialist Doctors for further treatment.

All the helpful and generous doctors were given a Certificate of Appreciation for supporting the Umang team in such a noble cause. These Doctors were more than happy and eager to give their support in many such events to be held in near future as without them the event would not have become a hit among the residents.

Precaution is always better than cure and such check-up camps do help the common man to understand his body structure and take precautionary measures as per his eating habits. If every youth of India takes a simple step towards creating a healthy atmosphere around his place then surely medicines and diseases would be just a part of history.

Umang Foundation and its team have planned similar check-up camps in every month to build up a habit of healthy living among all.

This was Umang Foundation’s 152nd event.
