Nurturing Young with Kindness
14th Nov 2009: Today was a remarkable day for Umang Foundation as Team Umang organized its 125th activity.
The venue was Parivartan Shikshan Sanstha – a learning center located at Wadala East, Mumbai, which educates about 150 less fortunate children.
It was Children’s Day celebration organized by Umang Foundation. The day was made unforgettable for these children, filled with learning and laughter, lots of fun, food and frolic. It was organized with frenzied activity for hordes of children who swarmed the Shikshan Sanstha’s premises to be a part of the celebration.
Team Umang - Abhilasha Kale, Sandeep Bhanushali, Roli Sharma, Sweta Singh, Pooja Agarwal, Mukul Gaur, Chetan Karkhanis, Mayuri Parekh, Shiv Iyer, Shiva Reddy, Gaurav Gujare, Anup Palod, Shilpa Jaithalya, Ashish Goyal and Ashish Choudhary reached the venue before time to organize and decorate the premises.
The Sanstha had invited kids to come in two batches. Kids in the age group – 4 to 8 years came at around 10 am The second batch had kids in the age group – 8 to 12 years came around 01.00 pm.
The day started by Anup Palod, Member - Team Umang explaining the significance of Children’s Day to the kids. This was followed by snack distribution.
A painting competition was organized, for which a compass box (with pencils, eraser, sharpener and scale), crayons and drawing sheet were distributed. All the kids were engrossed in painting and trying to showcase their talent in the best possible way. The best drawings won surprise gifts while the rest of them got consolation prizes.
After this, caps and face masks were distributed to create a Fun Fair theme among the children. Since it was lunch time puri –bhaji, sheera and rasna (cold drink) were served.
These innocent kids were so happy about the whole event that they wanted to have some more fun.
Then it was a turn for the second batch of kids of age group – 8 to 12 years.
Gaurav Gujare, Member - Team Umang started by giving a short summary about the significance of Children’s Day.
This was followed by mimicry of Bollywood Stars done by Mukul Gaur Member - Team Umang. The kids were so thrilled that soon demands started pouring in for mimicry of their favorite stars.
Some of the talented kids sang the poems and songs taught by their teachers at the Sanstha.
Then, Anup Palod Member - Team Umang went on to sing ”Itni shakti humein dena Daatha” so beautifully that the kids started singing too. Asif Khan, a super-talented kid among the group, then sang an Arabic song. His voice was simply awesome. He even went on to explain the meaning of the lyrics.
This was followed by different games organized among the kids like ‘Tail the Donkey’ and ‘Passing the Parcel’. The winners got gifts and all other got gifts too.
Just before the celebrations were about to end, music and dance masti added an extra edge to the fun. Members of Umang Foundation were busy learning dance steps from the kids. Dancing to the tune of the latest Bollywood numbers made the environment all the more happening.
Mr. Gangadhar Shinde, Care-taker of Parivartan Shikshan Sanstha and all the teachers were thankful to the Umang Foundation from the bottom of their hearts. One of them rightly summed up by saying - ”Umang Foundation’s efforts to celebrate this day in a different way, was just driven by a strong urge to make it a memorable experience for these children who are otherwise deprived of such privileges”.

Mumbai: While the rest of the world celebrates Children's Day on November 20 every year, India celebrates it six days ahead, on the birth anniversary of its most beloved Prime Minister - Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. With the Right to Education Bill passed successfully by our parliamentarians, education has become a fundamental right of children across the country.
However, education is not penetrating the darkest corners of India's society, due to poor implementation. But at the same time, educationists across the country are doing their bit by stretching a lending hand to the needy and teaching the importance of education in a child's life.
Sharonee Mullick, principal of Singapore International School (SIS), Mumbai, said, "Even though the literacy rate has gone up in our country, there are large sections of society which are deprived of basic education. It is our duty to step in and share our resources with those who are in need of help."
Following the belief, the IB School, has adopted Vivekanand Madhyamik Vidyalaya (VMV) at Vikramgarh, as a part of a Saturday school project, since August 2007. "Our children teach their counterparts who are underprivileged, on health education and different types of vocational skills with a vision that it will help them for their livelihood. This was started by Grade 12 students and taken over by the Grade 11 with more involvement and participation even from lower grades," she added.
Meera Isaac, principal of Cathedral and John Connon School, Fort, agrees, stating that providing holistic education to children should be the main objective of the country.
"We have been striving to provide a holistic education that imparts knowledge as well as moral value to the children. At our school, we undertake several initiatives such as exchange programmes, social work etc to inculcate knowledge to them," she said.
With education gaining more significance in children's lives, the country is seeing an increased number of non-government organisations (NGO) working in the field. Child Rights and You (CRY) and Umang Foundation are some of the prominent NGOs working in the field of education for the needy children.
"We are involved in distributing free books, stationary and bags for the underprivileged children in the city. We will also be celebrating this children's day with such students, hosting fun activities for them," said Ashish Goyal, Umang Foundation. However, Avnita Bir, principalof RN Podar School, Santacruz felt that India is not able to manage the human resource it has to its full potential.
"People say that India has a very young population and that we have a demographic advantage of such a majority. However, this majority can achieve full potential and contribute only if education and skills are provided. Only then we will be able to meet the challenges the 21st century throws at us," she said.
Nitya Ramaswami, Head of Child Development and Academics at Kidzee and Zee School, one of the largest chains of educational institutes, firmly stresses on the importance of education.
"We call children are our future, but they are also the present. It is imperative that each one of us honour the right of every child to education. Education for children must be universal, enabling their development, free of discrimination, participatory and enabling them for life," she said.
She further emphasised that devoid of education, children would be vulnerable to exploitation. "Education must empower the child with life skills, build character and assimilate information, imbibe values, teach them to respect and act with responsibility. If we achieve this, we are creating an empowered and enlightened generation for tomorrow," she added.
Lina Ashar, chairperson of Kangaroo Kids Education Limited, said, "Children should indeed be educated to become worthy citizens of the world. Education brings to them knowledge, skills and attitude that helps them create their own paths to success and self actualisation. Without education their developments would be responses to specific stresses. As children grow up, they might find themselves unequal to the challenges that life might throw up at them."
Straight from the heart: Perspectives on the importance of education for all children

"I support three charities, Baljivan for the homeless, Sneha for the education of slum children and women, and Javyakeel School, which looks after education for mentally challenged kids. Only after I was blessed with three children did I realise that we do need to look after the children of the country and education is the basic necessity. When you are single you tend to be selfish, but when your own children come along, you realise that every one of us has the moral duty to realise that the children of the country, especially poor and downtrodden are our responsibility too and they all deserve good education. Someone has to take the initiative to do work towards educating these children. I think education is the key aspect, which could help our country grow in leaps and bounds, apart from of course, helping these kids immensely. I sincerely believe that education holds the key solution to most problems like population, diseases, etc. that are bothering the country. I think the sole reason why I did better than a lot of my peers is because I was perhaps better educated than them."

"Curiosity is the key that drives learning, and if a child's natural curiosity is whetted and fed, unfettered by narrow confines of strict limits and restrictions of subjects, you have a sound foundation for life. Learning is vital to lifelong growth, and is too often made a slave merely to skills, application and careers.
It's never been easier to find things out for yourself. As never before, there's such a wealth of information and knowledge available at our fingertips.
The thing is to know how to look well and wide, yet thoroughly. If you equip a child to do this, and discover the fun of finding out, it will not only provide better answers to all those teeming questions in the young mind, but will make for a far better person and world.
When there is such overwhelming want of every kind in our country, the challenge, of course is to try and do this for as many children as possible. Its a gargantuan task, but that's what we need to work towards. After all, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

"Education is by far the most important requirement for kids in a country like India which is growing so fast. Basically a little bit of far sightedness towards education is important if we want to see our country literate, I mean complete literacy at all levels. We must make our education system successful. Every parents and teacher should focus on imparting education because it is the basic requisite for the wholesome development of a child. Education is the only tool which develops a child's personality and gives a confidence to face the world. And by education, I don't only mean bookish education. You can always differentiate very easily between a well educated person and a person who is not literate; education with knowledge gives the person finesse.
Whatever said and done, education should not be neglected. Just because I am a successful music director, it doesn't necessarily mean that my kids have to follow the same path. If they are interested, they can do so but as parents we give equal importance to education. Even when I was into music, I never neglected my studies.

Diwali Decoration and Celebration at Old Age Home
Ever imagined celebrating festivals with unknown people away from home? Many of us can’t even imagine celebrating festivals without our loved ones around. This weekend, Saturday 10th Oct 2009, Team Umang has reached a scenic venue where its members are not from a single family.
Yup, you guessed it right! Team Umang has visited a beautifully located Old Age Home in Bhayender (W), Kisan Gopal Rajpuriya Vanprastha Ashram – a second inning home for approx 50 people to bring in the festive spirit of Diwali in all its glory for those who are at a home away from home. This Old Age home is located near Uttan Area in the outskirts of Bhayender.
Team Umang reached the second inning home at 10 a.m. The residents were already seated in the hall area of the Ashram eagerly awaiting the arrival of Team Umang and the celebrations that would come along. The old age residents shook hands and greeted Team Umang with enthusiastic fervor and seemed happy and excited to have them in their premises. Team Umang then went around chit-chatting and greeting the residents individually and after a wholesome, scrumptious breakfast of Poha, dhoklas and tea initiated the celebrations at the Ashram with a bang.
The day was started with Introduction note about Umang Foundation by Diksha Bhojwani and Ashish Goyal to all the inmates and not to a surprise; many inmates could recognize Ashish as this was his 5th visit to this second inning home.
A Bhajans Mandli was invited to entertain and interact with the house members. They were very delighted to hear their favorite bhajans LIVE in front of them.
The bhajans turned out to be a huge hit with the residents and most of them, some even above 70 years of age, stood up to shake a leg or to sing their hearts out with any song they were fond of. The result was an atmosphere filled with divine music and merry and the ashram hall turning into a dance floor.
Who said, practice makes man perfect, we have seen age has no barriers for those who believe people go old by thoughts not by will. These excited housemates were dancing better than any of the members of Team Umang out there then, started the demonstration of singing skills, and they were really melodious.
Meanwhile, the Girls of Team Umang were busy in decorating the house with rangoli, flowers etc. Even boys got a chance to show their hidden talents in rangoli!!! Doors were decorated with stickers and Flowers all around.
A very special bouquet made by uncles and aunties to honor our Trustee Mr. R S Goyal and special thanks to Mr. Yogesh the vocalist of the Bhajan Mandli.
Then at 1:00 PM, its time for lunch which was served and arranged by Team Umang with a simple staple food and sweets in the menu. Housekeeping team of the Old Age home had their share of rest that day, since all the major tasks were handled by the Team Umang. Some of the house mates could not be a part of all these activities because their body is not supporting them to move from their bed but utmost care was taken to interact with them in their respective rooms.
They got emotionally attached with the Team Umang within some time and started narrating sweet memories of their past.
Action resumed in the evening with all the residents assembling inside the temple where a game of housie was organized by Team Umang. Excitement started as game master Gaurav Gujare announced the prizes which were either a medicine box or a spectacle case and it seemed everybody was determined to win the game with fervor, innocence and competitive spirit.
Also, the temple was decorated with Flowers and a beautiful rangoli made by girls of Team Umang.
There were several prizes to be won and in the end every player ended up with a prize in hand. The residents were then distributed packets of ‘Laddoos’ and ‘Namkeen’ as snacks and a Diwali memento of a packet of beautifully decorated Diyas were handed over to each resident.
The residents, away from home, missing their families, had joy on their faces, memories in their eyes and expressed their wholehearted gratitude with priceless smiles, heartfelt blessings and a promise from Team Umang to come again to the Ashram soon, to be their family in the many more festive seasons to come.
Team Umang bid the residents and the Ashram farewell with a mixture of emotions, joy in their eyes and tears in their hearts.
Sometimes, small events bring the greater joy in life. This was a perfect example for understanding how small moments of life can bring greatest joy to people who have given their whole and soul in making young and responsible citizens.
May these Housemates and their families have a very wonderful and happiest Diwali ever!

Action resumed in the evening with all the residents assembling inside the temple where a game of housie was organized by Team Umang. Excitement started as game master Gaurav Gujare announced the prizes which were either a medicine box or a spectacle case and it seemed everybody was determined to win the game with fervor, innocence and competitive spirit.
Also, the temple was decorated with Flowers and a beautiful rangoli made by girls of Team Umang.
There were several prizes to be won and in the end every player ended up with a prize in hand. The residents were then distributed packets of ‘Laddoos’ and ‘Namkeen’ as snacks and a Diwali memento of a packet of beautifully decorated Diyas were handed over to each resident.
The residents, away from home, missing their families, had joy on their faces, memories in their eyes and expressed their wholehearted gratitude with priceless smiles, heartfelt blessings and a promise from Team Umang to come again to the Ashram soon, to be their family in the many more festive seasons to come.
Team Umang bid the residents and the Ashram farewell with a mixture of emotions, joy in their eyes and tears in their hearts.
Sometimes, small events bring the greater joy in life. This was a perfect example for understanding how small moments of life can bring greatest joy to people who have given their whole and soul in making young and responsible citizens.

Members of Umang foundation- a Mumbai based registered NGO provided education material to underprivileged students’ free of cost at schools across Kalyan. Five hundred students from Ganesh Vidyamandir, Nutan Hindi Vidyalaya and Gyan Vidya Mandir were given free materials.
Notebooks, pencils, pens, scales, erasers and sharpeners were distributed as part of the campaign. Ashish Goyal, founder of Umang Foundation interacted with kids and made them realise the importance of education. The kids were in the age group of 5 to 15 years.

Creating ‘Umang’ among school students: A Glimpse
Vithalwadi, Kalyan – 03/10/09: Gone are the days when youngsters planned out parties and trips with friends to enjoy the weekend. A group of 20 youngsters enjoyed their Saturday in a more sensible way last week.
This Saturday, the hangout place for these young professionals was a school in Vithalwadi (A small town near Kalyan). Umang Foundation had planned for the Distribution of Notebooks and Stationery to the students of R.K Tripathi Hindi High School in Vithalwadi (East).
Members of Umang Foundation R S Goyal, Sandeep Bhanushali, Yograj Kolhe, Chetan Karkhanis, Deena Sawlani, Anand Prakash, Suni Chanchlani, Roli, Karishma Thakur, Rahul R Gupta, Kirti, Renuka Bhavake, Amit Tyagi, Mohit Gogia, Ashish Choudhary, Pooja Agarwal, Sweta Singh and Ashish Goyal have reached to school on scheduled time of 09:00 AM.
Distribution started with Class 6 students and then followed with the students from Class I to Class X as per their school timings. Umang Foundation’s members were busy preparing the packets for the students as per their Class standards. As the classrooms were not spacious enough, the arrangement was made in an open space just outside the school. Humidity, Load Shedding and scorching hot sun didn’t de-motivate any of the youngsters who usually spend their major time in posh IT offices.
These innocent Students were seen standing in a queue to get their share of packets containing notebooks and stationery as per their Class Standards [Class I to Class X]
Around 500 students were given the packets in separate batches and children were quite excited about it. Distribution was followed with an interactive session with these little kids in their classrooms. Hearing out their future plans and dreams concluded that seriously, ‘Dreams has no boundaries and limitations’. Umang Foundation promised to help these students with such studying materials in future too.
Principal and Teachers of the school were happy with the motivation given to these needy students. Some students expressed their gratitude by touching the feet. The young team of Umang Foundation was overwhelmed with the response of the students and teachers.
Kamana Tripathi, principal of R K Tripathi School has appreciated the efforts made by members of Umang Foundation, she further stated that these kind of activities, helps school students not only in terms of supporting their education but also gives them a picture to become responsible citizen of country and help fellow citizen.
The event was a source of inspiration for the young professionals and entrepreneurs in our country and proved wrong the statement made very popular these days that “Weekend party is the only way to de-stress yourself”. This young team of Umang Foundation has a different perspective though.
